Wildlife Safaris in East Africa

East Africa's fauna, in particular, its high concentrations of large mammals are unsurpassed, and are among the regions major attractions. While its big five (lion, buffalo, elephant, leopard and rhino) that attract most of the attention, there are many wildebeests, zebras, dik-diks, gazelles, kudus, elands, giraffes and antelopes. There are also many predators including hyenas, leopards, and wild dogs. East Africa is famous for its primates including chimpanzees (especially in Tanzania's Gombe Stream and Mahale Mountains national parks) and gorillas in the Virunga ranges of Rwanda and Uganda.

East Africa is also home to 60,000 insect species, which include the malaria-carrying anopheles mosquito and the tsetsefly, several dozen species of reptiles and amphibians, a wide variety of snakes and numerous fish species. Lakes Tanganyika and Nyasa are notable for having the highest fish diversities of any lake in the world, with an exceptionally large number of colorful cichlid species.

Bird watching safaris in East Africa are exceptionally interesting since the region has registered over 1500 bird species. Some of the birds include ostriches, kingfishers, bee-eaters, fish eagles, flamingoes, and the most sought-after elusive shoebill. Uganda with a geographical area of 236,6000sq km accommodates more than 1000 bird species – making it Africa’s premier bird watching destination.
