Lake Mburo National Park
Lake Mburo national park is located along the main tarmac road from Kampala to Mbarara connecting Uganda's western national parks. Just 370km2 in size, the park's undulating territory with an altitude range from 1,220m to 1,828m above sea level, with open savanna and acacia woodland interspersed with rocky ridges and forested gorges, patches of papyrus swamp and narrow bands of lush riparian woodland on the verges of the various lakes is scenically reminiscent of Lake Naivasha in the Kenyan Rift Valley. Though down to the low big five count due to the lack of the lion and elephant, Lake Mburo national park offers excellent game viewing for different. The park harbours several animal species not easily seen elsewhere in Uganda. Lake Mburo national park is the only reserve in the country supporting a population of impala, the handsome antelope for which Kampala is named, and one of only three protected areas countrywide where Burchelles zebra is present, the other two being Kidepo and Pian Upe. Other antelope species very common in this park include Defassa waterbuck, Bohor reedbuck, bushbuck, topi, common duiker and oribi. Hippos, buffaloes, vervet monkeys and baboons are also common. The sitatunga antelope can be seen in wetlands, and the klipspringer is occasionally seen in rocky areas.
Over 315 bird species have been recorded in Lake Mburo national park. It is the best place in Uganda to see acacia-associated birds. Rwonyo Camp is ideal for viewing the likes of mosque swallow, bare-faced go-away bird, Rupella's long-tailed starling and black-bellied bustard. In the swamps are the six papyrus endemics including the brilliantly coloured papyrus gonolek, the striking blue-headed coucal, and the highly localized white-winged and papyrus yellow warblers, the last recorded nowhere else in Uganda.

Tourist Activities in Lake Mburo National Park
- Boat Trips: The motorboat trip is the most popular activity on Lake Mburo. It leaves the main jetty at the main campsite 1km from Rwonyo Camp. The boat trip offers opportunities to see hippos, crocodiles, buffaloes, waterbucks and bushbucks. Some of the important birds you will be able to spot include African fish eagle, marabou stork, pied kingfisher, and various eaglets and herons, while Ross’ Turaco and Narina Trogon are frequently seen in the lakeside thickets. Lake Mburo is the best place in Uganda to see the elusive African finfoot.
- Game Drives
The Impala and Zebra tracks connect Sanga and Nshara gates to Rwonyo Camp respectively. They are the best tracks to explore the park. During the wet season substantial concentrations of impala, zebra, waterbuck, topi, and buffalo are common only 2km from Rwonyo Camp in the park-like savanna at the junction of Impala and Warukiri tracks. In the dry season, the most interesting roads are the Lakeside track and Kigambira Loop. Here you will be able to see hippos, warthogs, Defassa waterbuck, bushbuck, and common duiker as well as a variety of woodland and water associated birds.
- Guided Walks
Lake Mburo is one of the parks in Uganda where nature walks can freely be done anywhere in the park in the company of armed game rangers. A better target is the viewing platform that overlooks a salt lick about 2km from Rwoyo Camp. It is the best place to see a wide variety of animals as they are attracted to this place to lick the salty soil. Off Rwizi track is the Rubanga forest which is of great interest to walkers and birders. This place can only be visited in the company of an armed ranger.
