Bwindi Gorilla Park, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park

Bwindi means impenetrable. The 372 sq km of tangled rainforest submerging a deeply fissured landscape of steep, slippery valleys and, draughty ridges represents one of the recent Africa's most recent tropical rainforest. The average temperature in Bwindi ranges between 70c to 200c with the coldest period being June and July.

Bwindi tourism focuses on gorilla trekking. More than half the world mountain gorilla population reside in Bwindi forest (about 360 individuals living in 15 troops). The forest is a natural habitat to at least 120 mammal species, more than any Uganda national park except Queen Elizabeth national park. It also harbours 11 primate species including a considerable population of chimpanzees, substantial numbers of LHoests, red-tailed and blue monkeys, black-and-white colobus and olive baboons. For the so-called big five only elephants are available. Total of 350 bird species have been recorded in Bwindi impenetrable Forest National Park. This is a remarkably high figure compared to other national park checklists since includes very few water-associated birds. Of these 23 species are Albertine Rift Endemics, and at least 14 species are recorded nowhere else in Uganda including the African green broad-bill, white-bellied robin chat, white-tailed blue flycatcher, brown-necked parrot, and Frazer’s eagle owl. The park is also home to 200 butterfly species of which 8 are Albertine Rift Endemics.
